TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... FRANCESCO RENGA

Italian singer-songwriter Pierfrancesco Renga was born 56 years ago in Udine, is in a relationship and has 2 children.

In 1983, Francesco formed a group named ‘Modus Vivendi’ with some friends, with whom he participated in a music competition a year later.  Afterwards, he joined another band called ‘Precious Time’ which later changed its name to ‘Timoria’ and again entered a competition and won.  He remained with this group for about 13 years and in the meantime continued to develop his artistic skills.

Renga graduated from scientific high school and then passed an exam to join the Guardia di Finanza Academy.  He, however, changed his mind and took a Commerce and Economics course but the following year changed again and opted for an art director course.  As he had this passion for music, Renga decided to quit his studies to focus on a music career.

‘Timoria”s debut album was released in 1990 and was very successful, so much so that it rendered the band famous and they became very popular with the younger generation, not just in their native Italy, but also across Europe.  Francesco stayed with the group until quasi the end of 1998, by which time they released 5 more albums which continued to make them more popular.

Due to internal disagreements with the group’s guitarist, Renga decided to leave and proceed as a solo artist.  In 1999, he released his first single ‘Affogo, baby’, followed by his debut album the following year.  He participated for the first time in the San Remo Music Festival in 2001 and again the year after.  After a 2-year break, Francesco returned to the San Remo stage plus releasing more albums.

In 2005, he managed to win the Festival with the track ‘Angelo’.  Over the next 2 decades, Renga proceeded with his career and released several other albums, took part in the San Remo Festival numerous times as well as collaborated with other artists by writing songs for them and singing in duet with them.

Francesco has also appeared in several TV programmes and even published a book.  During his career so far, Renga won 2 Lunezia Awards and a Critics’ Award.
