TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... ALISON MOYET

English singer-songwriter Genevieve Alison Jane Ballard nee’ Moyet was born 63 years ago in Essex, is married and has 3 children.

Alison left school when she was 16, then worked as a shop assistant as well as took piano tuner lessons.  She later formed part of various bands of different music genres including blues, punk and pub rock.  At the age of 20, she formed the duo Yazoo and they released 2 albums and had various hits like ‘Don’t Go’, ‘Only You’ and ‘Nobody’s Diary’.

In 1984, Alison embarked on a solo career after ‘Yazoo’ split and her debut album was issued.  It was very successful and featured 3 international top ten hits: ‘Invisible’, ‘Love Resurrection’ and ‘All Cried Out’.  By the end of the 80s, she had more successful hits like ‘Is this Love?’, ‘Weak in the Presence of Beauty’, ‘Ordinary Girl’ and ‘Love Letters’.

After a 4-year hiatus, Moyet released her third album and a 4th one 3 years later.  Due to a dispute with her record company, Alison did not release any albums for more than 8 years.  During this time, however, she provided vocals to several artists and groups.   Then, in 2002, she recorded her 5th album with a new record company.

From that year to date, Alison released 4 studio, 1 compilation, 2 live and 2 extended plays, plus 12 singles and 2 videos on DVD.  An upcoming studio album is expected to be released in October this year and in 2025, Alison will embark on a world tour as well.

Moyet achieved 6 awards including 3 Brit and a Silver Clef, and in 2021 was designated member of the Order of the British Empire for her music works.
