TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... SANDY MARTON

Aleksandar Marton was born on 4th October 1959 in Croatia’s capital city Zagreb.  He is a former singer, songwriter and musician.

Since his dad worked in Italy, Sandy passed a lot of time there and eventually moved to Milan when he was older in the 70s.

Whilst performing in a nightclub in 1982, he was noticed by Italian record producer Claudio Cecchetto.  Although Sandy was in his 20s, Claudio reckoned that he had a high probability of becoming a teen idol in view of his good looks.  So, the following year, with Claudio’s help, Sandy released his first single ‘Ok Run’ which was also used for a commercial.

Then, a year later, Sandy composed the song ‘People from Ibiza’ which was a number one hit in various countries.  Sandy’s appearance with long blonde hair, a lightweight synthesizer and very large jackets won the hearts of juveniles, especially girls, and as Claudio Cecchetto thought, became an idol of the youth generation.

In the 2 years that followed, Sandy recorded 2 more big hits, namely ‘Camel by Camel’ which reached the Top 10 and ‘Exotic and Erotic’ which placed with the Top 20 on the Italian charts.  These two songs were very popular on the dancefloors in discos and nightclubs.

Sandy also participated often in the then famous Festivalbar, which was a singing competition held during the summer months in Italy and the live performances were organised in different prominent squares around the country.

Marton’s first album was issued in 1985, featuring the song ‘Modern Lovers’ which reached 8th place on the Italian charts.  His final hit single ‘Paloma Blanca’ was released 4 years later and was also a Top 10 hit.

Afterwards, Sandy almost retired entirely from the music scene due to a decline in popularity, but did release another album in 1996, with minimum success.

In 2001, he took part in a musical competition which featured the most popular 80s songs.  He managed to reach the semi-final with ‘People from Ibiza’.
