TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... PRINCE

American singer-songwriter, musician and dancer Prince Roger Nelson was born on 7th June 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and passed away on 21st April 2016.  He was divorced and had a son.

Prince’s career began in 1978 when his first single ‘Soft and Wet’ was released.  A year later, another song was issued named ‘I Wanna be your Lover’, which was an American R & B singles chart number one hit.  His third album followed in 1980.

During the 80’s, Prince became more successful internationally with further number one hits like ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘Kiss’ and ‘Batdance’.  In addition, he also had three songs which reached number two, namely ‘Raspberry Beret’, ‘U got the Look’ and ‘Purple Rain’.

Prince had the song ‘Nothing compares 2 U’ which singer Sinead O’Connor released as a cover version in 1990.  It was a number one hit for her and naturally, Prince was not happy about it at all!

In the next 2½ decades until his demise, Prince released around 40 albums, spread amongst studio, compilation, live, remixes and New Power Generation.  He also starred in 4 films, 3 of which he directed as well and appeared in a couple of TV shows.

Just 2 weeks before his death, Prince cancelled two concerts, claiming he had the flu.  He gave his last performance a week later, in spite of still feeling unwell.  He passed away in his own home from a medicinal drug overdose.

Prince was an active philanthropist but never boasted about his charitable ventures.  In fact, it was only after he died that a small part of it was publicised.  He hugely supported animal rights and was a vegetarian.

During his 40-year career, Prince won 32 awards including 7 Grammy, an Academy, 11 ASCAP Pop Music and 4 MTV Video Music.  He was inducted in 3 Music Halls of Fame, namely Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues and UK, as well as received a Doctor of Humane Letters Degree by Minnesota University in 2016.
