TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY... NIKKA COSTA

American singer-songwriter Domenica known as Nikka Costa was born 52 years ago in Tokyo, Japan, is married and has a daughter.

Nikka grew up in the music world, as since she was a child, her dad Don Costa, who was a very well-known musician and producer, took her along with him all around the world where she met numerous famous artists.  At just 5 years old, she recorded a duet with a Hawaiian singer and 4 years later, she featured on one of her dad’s albums as a vocalist and consequently became a child star.  Nikka even sang with famous singer Frank Sinatra when she was 9.

Costa’s career took off in 1981 when she recorded ‘(Out here) On my Own’, also featuring her dad.  The track was an Italian number one hit and it faired quite well in some other European countries.  Her debut album was also released that same year, but outside the US, followed by a world tour.  In 1983, her second album came out and shortly afterwards, her father passed away.

Up to this time, Nikka sang only pop music, but as she grew older and became more mature, she opted to change to different music genres like soul, funk and R & B.  In the early 90s, she started writing songs and went on to form the short-lived band named ‘Little Mona & the Shag Daddies’.  In 1994, she created another band called ‘Sugarbone’ and toured Australia, since it had become her home country after marriage.

Since then, Nikka released 10 more albums including studio, promotional and video, 4 EPs and 15 singles.  She was nominated twice for an ARIA Music Award in 1996 and 1997.
