TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY...MARK KING

Mark Raymond King was born 64 years ago on the Isle of Wight, England, is married and has 4 children.  He is a singer, songwriter and musician and is best known as the lead singer and bassist of the group ‘Level 42’.

When he was 9 years old, Mark was gifted with a drum kit from his dad, so he started practising and 2 years later, he also learnt the guitar.  In school, his music teacher persuaded him to pursue a music career but was expelled from school as he attended class wearing jeans.  He then worked a couple of jobs and travelled to London to try his luck in the music industry.  For some time, he played the drums with a group named ‘Re-Flex’.

In 1979, the band ‘Level 42’ was formed, including Mark and 3 other members.  He learnt to play the bass and was like a natural.  During the 80s, the group released several hits which reached the Top 10 in the UK charts namely ‘The Sun goes down (living it up)’, ‘Something About You’, ‘Lessons in Love’ and ‘Running in the Family’.

Since Mark had become a renowned bass-player, he was requested to play for artists like Nik Kershaw and Midge Ure.  As a group, ‘Level 42’, supported other popular bands and singers like Madonna, Queen and The Police on their respective tours.

As a solo Artist, Mark released 5 albums and 3 singles and toured Europe as well as the Far East.  He was also honoured with 2 Awards related to his music.

Mark actively supports the Prince’s Trust which is a non-profitable organisation that helps teenagers and youths in school matters, find employment etc.
